Welcome to the coven

We are Australia’s biggest grassroots movement dedicated to fighting media lies

Who we are

MFW is a large online group of women and men who’ve had it with the bias and lack of truth in most of our mainstream media. We jointly call ourselves witches (yes, even the men), and our common characteristic is that we care about the climate crisis, science, facts, and ridding the world of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and all similar forms of hate and bigotry.

For more than five years we’ve called out these injustices on social media, and for almost two years we’ve organised and operated large grass-roots collective campaigns to teach people about the dangers of a mainstream media which is largely set up to benefit the powerful and well-connected rather than the average citizens it’s meant to serve.

If you care about making the world a better place and ridding it of incipient authoritarianism and attacks on democracy, get on board with MFW. It matters. And it works.

What we do

Around the world, many media organisations now use hate speech, propaganda and lies to spread fake news and convince people to act and vote against their own interests. And many individual commentators use this media to spread their own agendas of misogyny, racism, bigotry, and anti-science rhetoric.

These organisations and individuals are now the focus of MFWs effective, targeted consumer campaigns. We call out their dangerous hate and lies, and if they refuse to change what they say, we ask those companies who advertise with such organisations to stop funding and supporting them. This is a highly effective strategy which calls on companies to live by their own stated values and morals, and to instead support the customers, clients, staff and suppliers who rely on them to stand up for what’s right.

In this way we change and improve the world, one horrible shock-jock and one evil media magnate at a time.

We are the granddaughters of the witches you couldn’t burn

our work is made possible by a team of tenacious women and men who care

MFW is not affiliated with any political party or organisation, and we don’t use advertising, sponsorships or any other form of partisan funding. We’re fiercely independent and operate solely via the generosity and enthusiasm of those who support our aims and hope, as we do, for a better world for those coming after us.

Acknowledgement of Country

Witches acknowledge the First Peoples of this land as the oldest living culture on the planet and their enduring connections to Country, knowledge and stories. We pay our respects to Ancestors and Elders, present and emerging. As sovereignty was never ceded, Witches believe it always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

We recognise the brutal treatment of First Nations people and that colonisation was founded on their genocide and dispossession. We acknowledge that colonial structures and policies remain in place today which perpetuate the ongoing struggles of First Nations people, and must be dismantled.
